Alien In-Line is coming to our school from May 24-June22, 2022. Your child will have the opportunity to have 5 – 1hour skating lessons with an instructor.

This week there will be a form coming home with your child called, the “Acknowledgement of Risk and Consent of Parent or Guardian” please sign this and return to school. This form is required in order for your child to participate in this activity.ALL students are required to have this signed in order to participate in Alien Inline skating.

The instructor will focus on many basic and advanced skating skills. Skills introduced will vary based on student’s abilities and may include; standing on skates/basic position, simple forward motion, several ways to stop, several ways to turn, safe skating strategies, road/pathway etiquette, and non-aerial jumping. Instruction time is followed by games chosen to use the skills in a more active situation. Some sessions may end with a period of free skating time, often accompanied by music.

Safety and Protective Gear - Alien In-Line provides protective gear for each student (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet).  Skates are provided too.

Helmets and Head Lice - Alien In-Line strictly requires ALL students to wear a certified helmet at ALL times while on skates. We provide certified helmets for all students, but are aware of that use of shared helmets can contribute to the spread of head-lice. Due to allergy and environmental concerns, they do NOT treat our helmets with anti-lice pesticides – and suggest that parents concerned about head-lice have children bring their own helmet to school for use during the Alien In-Line program. Bike, skateboard, and hockey helmets are acceptable. Football, BMX, ski/ snowboard, or other types of helmets are NOT acceptable.

We also had a student from our class present a research project on "What is a Virus?"

Srta. Bertolesi will be away for the next few weeks! We will have Sra. Maria Climent teaching us until Srta. Bertolesi returns. She will miss us very much but knows we will be able to show her all the incredible stuff we learn while she is away.

Tuesday, April 5th

Yesterday we learned that there are 29 Indigenous Communities under Drinking Water Advisories. This means that they do have access to clean running water. We also watched a video about Autumn Peltier, the Chief Water Commissioner for Anishnabek Nation. When she was just 12 years old she met the prime minister and told him that she wasn't happy with his choices. She is a great example that even kids can make a difference. You can help these communities by spreading the word and making sure everyone knows that there are people in Canada who don't have clean drinking water, and that's not fair. If you want to see the video, click here!

Today we went down to the library and got to preview the book fair! We made a wish list that we are bringing home!

We also had a fire drill today!

Monday, April 4th

Dalhousie is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from April 11-14.   The Scholastic Book Fair is a fantastic way to continue to give our students access to the books they want to read. We are so happy that our students can interact with the fair at our school, and choose their next favourite book! All purchases benefit our school and earn rewards that can be redeemed for books and education resources for our classrooms and school library. Students will be coming home with flyers soon so that they are able to preview what titles will be available. They will also be allowed an in person preview from April 5-7 to finalize wish lists. We will be accepting cash for our in-school fair, and all taxes are included in the listed price.   We ask that you go through the preview with your child and where possible, if they are purchasing at school during the day, to send them with exact change.

For parents, family, and friends who wish to purchase online, you will be able to shop our Virtual Book Fair, and select the books that inspire your readers from the comfort of home. The virtual book fair will be open from April 7-19.  If you prefer to shop virtually, please visit our school’s Virtual Book Fair Extension.  The Virtual Fair will be open 24 hours, beginning at midnight on our start date. There are also no shipping fees on virtual orders! Orders are sent directly to our school.

In addition, we would like to welcome Dalhousie families into the school, assuming restrictions remain lifted.  On Wednesday, April 13 from 5pm – 7pm, Dalhousie will have an Open House where families can come into the school to meet their child’s teacher in person, see the classroom, the music room and other areas of the school.  They gym will not be available for viewing as it will be in use by the Dalhousie Out of School Care program.   You will also be able to visit and purchase from the book fair in person.  As this is an Open House, any questions you have about your child’s learning should be asked of your child’s teacher at a another mutually convenient time that has been arranged.   You will need to sign the sign in book at the front as well as confirm that you have passed the Daily Health Checklist.  Your child should be under your supervision at all times.   As the parking lot will be full, please park appropriately around the school being considerate of our neighbours as well as any parking restrictions.  For the evening Book Fair event, cash and credit will be accepted.

As there is a School Council/Parent Society meeting scheduled that evening, it will be a drop in event held in conjunction with the Open House where you can get information and offer to volunteer on all of the amazing initiatives spearheaded by the Dalhousie Parent Society.  No formal meeting will be held.
