Tuesday, November 30th

Today we made maps of Canada. We are going to start learning about a place called Acadia, so before we could learn where it is, we needed to think about Canada as a whole.

We watched the video of "The Longest Named Place in Canada!" It is a lake called Pekwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik Lake! It's TEN SYLLABLES LONG and it is in the Cree language. If you want to watch the video, you can click here!

We also reached our goal for Free Seating! On Friday we get to sit wherever we want and we get to do a Snowflake challenge!

Another thing we did today was change our Hands On math centres! We now have a graphing centre and an addition centre!

Today we had a substitute teacher!

The results are in!  Students were asked for feedback on Fun Lunch and as a result, new restaurants were added.  These are available in Healthy Hunger as well:

Tuesday, November 23rd

Today we finished out magnetic projects! It was a looooooong cleanup 😜😆

We also started learning about an addition strategy called near doubles. It is when we use the information we already know about doubles (like 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, etc.) to figure out addition questions that are near doubles. For example, since we already know 5+5=10, we can figure out that 5+6=11! We did an activity called Near Doubles Scoot! Let me practice some near doubles with you!

There is no class on Friday, November 26th as it is Parent-Teacher Conferences :)

Friday, November 19th

Due to some supply chain issues, the Cookie Dough fundraiser pickup has been changed to December 1 between 3-5.  This is still in time for some great holiday baking.  Thank you for your support! 🍪

This week we have been doing "Graph Talk" as part of our morning meeting. We have been learning how to make and read graphs. I can help you read this graph!

Today we did a cup stacking challenge. It was very hard to do but we showed growth mindset and perseverance and managed to make some cool shapes with the cups! These were the shapes we built. In the end, group 4 made the most number of shapes in the time we had! 🥇🥤

Thursday, November 18th

Today we made our first graph! We graphed the donations we brought in for the Veteran's Food Drive.

Tomorrow we will be doing a cup stacking challenge!

Wednesday, November 17th

Tomorrow we have library! Please bring back your library books so you can take out new ones!📚

Today in math, we counted all of the donations that we brought for the Veteran's Food Drive. We are collecting the data so that we can graph it. When we're making a graph, the first step is to decide how to collect the data. We sorted the donations into four categories: cans (latas), boxes (cajas), bags (bolsas), and bottles (botellas). Then we did tally marks to count how many items were in each category. Tomorrow we will turn this data into a graph

Today we also started building our magnetic projects. We read a book called "The Most MAGNIFICENT Thing!" by Ashley Spires. We talked about how important it is to persevere and not give up, even when we are angry or frustrated, just like the girl in the book!

Tuesday, November 16th

Today we did Sport Stacking since it was a little too windy to go outside for gym. Sport Stacking is stacking cups as fast as you can! It helps us with coordination, which can help us improve in other sports. We had a super duper (10/10) time! 🥤

Srta. Bertolesi is looking for some parent volunteers to help prepare some classroom resources. Because of COVID, parents are not allowed in the school right now, so volunteer time would happen at home. If you are available, or willing, please email Srta. Bertolesi at alibertolesi@cbe.ab.ca! It will mostly be cutting out laminated sheets or gluing some stuff together. I will send them home with your child and you can return them at your earliest convenience. Please know there is absolutely no pressure to volunteer! You are appreciated and awesome regardless!

Monday, November 15th

On Friday, Señorita Bertolesi put up some questions and answers in Spanish around the classroom! This is so we can start practicing asking each other questions in Spanish! When Señorita hears us talking to each other in Spanish (to the best of our abilities), we put a tally mark on the white board. When we get 5 tally marks, we get to put a rock in the jar! We are getting SO CLOSE to earning free seating for a day 😱 Let me ask you a question in Spanish!

Thank you to all you donated to the Poppy Campaign and the Veterans’ Food Drive.  We will be accepting donations for the food drive until November 19.

Online booking for Parent-Teacher Conferences being held on November 25 and 26 opens Thursday, November 18 at 10am and will be open until November 24 at 4pm.  Any changes after that time must be done through the office. Please take the opportunity to book a 15 minute conference with your child’s teacher at:  www.cbe.ab.ca/mycbe.

For these conferences, you are welcome to attend with your child or alone; we leave this up to parent discretion.   The purpose of these conferences is for teachers to share your child’s progress and achievement to date, as well as areas of strength and growth.

Conferences are being held on November 25 and 26:

  • There are no classes for Kindergarten students on either day
  • There are no classes for all students on Friday, November 26.  Thursday, November 25 is a regular, full day (9:05am-3:50pm) for Grades 1-5 students.

Wednesday, November 10th

Today we had a virtual Remembrance Day assembly! We watched a video made by students at our school and we heard a veteran talk.

Today we had time to "ketchup" on unfinished work. Srta. gave us a list of priorities and we worked super hard to get them all done! Also, señorita Bertolesi is the best artist in the world and you can tell by looking at her ketchup drawing! 🍅😜

There is no school tomorrow or on Friday. We will be back to school on Monday for another fabulous week of learning! Have a good long weekend!👋

Tuesday, November 9th

As of September 2022, the high school component of the CBE Spanish Bilingual Program will be located at Crescent Heights High School.  To highlight program information, an information session for families of Spanish Bilingual elementary students will be held November 24 at 6:30pm.  Please see this flyer for more information: Crescent Heights High School Spanish Bilingual Program Information Evening

Today we played "Friends of Ten"! We are practicing something called "tens friends" or "números amigos" in Spanish! It is the two numbers that work together to make 10! For this game, we would pull out a number between 0-10 and mark off the tens friend on our sheet with a bingo chip 😃 Once we have practiced "Friends of Ten," we can challenge ourselves to play "Friends of Twenty!"

We also had a fire drill today. We crushed it! 🔥

Monday, November 8th

A reminder that there is no school on November 11 & 12 for all students, due to Remembrance Day and a non-instructional day respectively.  School will resume on November 15.

Today we watched some videos about magnets. We added information to our magnets learning chart. We learned that the biggest magnet is in space and that magnet strength is measured in Teslas.

Friday, November 5, 2021

Friday, November 5th

Today we were talking about las preposiciones en español (prepositions in Spanish)! We practiced with our friend la Ardilla (the squirrel). I can show you how we play the game "donde está la ardilla?" We pick one, then someone asks "la ardilla está _____________?"

Thursday, November 4, 2021

Thursday, November 4th

Today we made poppies! The poppies are for Remembrance Day. We also read a poem about the war called "In Flanders Fields". If you want, I can tell you or show you how to make a poppy like the ones we made in class!🥀

Our book order forms are going home today! If you make a purchase, please use our class code: RC514886 as it gives a percentage back to the the class to buy more classroom books. Thank you!😀

Wednesday, November 3rd

TOMORROW  IS LIBRARY DAY! PLEASE BRING YOUR LIBRARY BOOKS! 📚📚📚📚📚We do not have library next week as there is no school on Thursday, November 11th for Remembrance Day.

We are still looking for donations for the Veteran's Food Drive! We are working hard to fill 3 whole boxes. Please see the blog post from Monday, November 1st for the list of the most urgently needed items. Thank you!

This is a picture of our word wall! We have learned and practiced spelling all of these words. Señorita Bertolesi expects us to spell them correctly all the time because we can always find them on our word wall. Each week we put six new sight words up on our word wall.

Tuesday, November 2, 2021

Tuesday, November 2nd

Today we finally got to start planning our own (individual) stuck stories! We also started setting up our number bingo! We each filled in a blank Bingo sheet with numbers from 1-100 in expanded form. When we play, Srta. Bertolesi will call out numbers and we will try to get 5 in a row!

We now have our magnet art up on our bulletin board! Look how cool it all looks together 🖌🧲🎨
